Dear Newman Friends,
NO SUNDAY MASSES - MARCH 9 & 16
Due to the Spring Break and the Student Center being closed there will not be any Sunday Masses (or dinner) at Newman for the next couple of Sundays. There will also not be Masses on Tues/Wed/Thurs (March 11-12-13). Ournext Sunday Mass will be on March 23. Sorry for the inconvenience. Attached is a list of nearby churches and Mass times.
MON, MARCH 3 - SPORTS NIGHT (8-9:30 PM)
Sports night continues at St. Scholastica's (8201 W Outer Dr., Detroit MI 48219).
TUES, MARCH 4 - WEEKLY BIBLE STUDY (1-2 PM)
Please feel free to drop-in on Tuesdays after Mass for the Bible Study. We begin with a 30 min DVD and then continue with a 30 min discussion. All are welcome to drop in, even if you have missed previous weeks.
WED, MARCH 5 - ASH WEDNESDAY (12:15 & 8PM MASSES)
We have 2 Masses to accommodate different schedules. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to receive ashes unless you attend one of the 2 Masses (at either 12:15pm or 8pm). Also, just a reminder that Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting & abstinence. We are invited to abstain from eating any meat and are to do our best to reduce the quantity of food we eat (approximately 2 meals instead of 3).
THURS, MARCH 6 - UPPER ROOM (7:30-9:30 PM)
This week we have a very special guest speaker, Chris Stepien. He is a WSU alumni who wrote a novel, "Three Days: Search for the Boy Messiah." It's based on the 5th Joyful Mystery of the Rosary - The Finding of Jesus in the Temple. I've personally read the book and it's really engaging. Chris is a very dynamic speaker and is so excited to be here with us. Please come out and join us. We will end the evening with a rosary and Eucharistic Adoration. See the attachment for more details.
FRI, MARCH 7 - THEOLOGY OF THE BODY
Weekly Theology of the Body sessions take place on Friday at 11am. This is one of the most powerful contributions that Pope John Paul II has made to Catholic thought. Leading up to his canonization it's great to become more familiar with his teachings. We will start w/ a DVD and follow with a discussion. No materials needed, just show up to learn about God's plan for sex and marriage.
40 DAYS FOR LIFE - All are invited to join other local students, including the seminarians from Sacred Heart Major Seminary, for a prayer vigil at the Southfield 40 days for Life location each Friday at 3pm. It's the Hour of Mercy what a great way to spend Fridays during Lent. We meet at Womancare 28505 Southfield Road, Southfield, Michigan Find out more about the campaign at http://40daysforlife.com/about.html
Many blessings upon you,
Brothers, Associates and Friends,
I am absolutely delighted to
inform you that His Holiness Pope Francis has named one of our
priests, Fr. Christian Riesbeck, Auxiliary Bishop of Ottawa.
We give heartfelt praise and
thanks to the Lord for His goodness! We know that Fr. Christian will
be a wonderful shepherd and will serve the Lord and His Bride, the
Church, with genuine humility, compassionate love, and energetic
zeal! As a community we are truly grateful to the Holy Father, for
calling one of our brothers to the Order of Bishops.
Bishop-elect Christian Riesbeck,
CC will bring with him to the Episcopal Order not only our
wholehearted support and constant prayers but the charism, mission,
and heritage of our spiritual family, the Companions of the Cross. I
cannot help but imagine the joy welling up in the heart of Fr. Bob,
our Founder and spiritual father, as he looks on.
The Episcopal ordination is
tentatively set for the Solemnity of St. Joseph, March 19, 2014 at
Notre Dame Cathedral in Ottawa. Confirmation of this date and further
details will be forthcoming in the days and weeks ahead.
Please join us in entrusting
Bishop-elect Christian to the maternal embrace of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, the first companion of the Cross.
