Welcome to the Newman Catholic Center! We invite you to come, study, relax, hang out, pray, and eat. There's a chapel, study rooms, lounge, kitchen, a piano-- let it be your home away from home!
Thursday, February 2 -- Movie Night
This week, during the Upper Room timeslot Cinema Newman will be hosting a movie night. Father Simon's pick of the month is "There Be Dragons: Even Saints Have a Past." It tells the life of St. Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei. Please arrive at 7:30pm so the movie can be started on time.
No Daily Mass This Week
Father Simon will be in Canada for important meetings with the Companions of the Cross all week (please pray for them). Unfortunately, there won't be any Masses on Tues, Jan 31, Wed, Feb 1, or Thurs, Feb 2. However, there will still be Sunday Masses before and after that week at 5pm.
Superbowl Sunday -- No Dinner
Due to the Superbowl on Sun, Feb 5 there will not be a dinner served at the Newman Center. This will allow people to leave from Mass and catch the kick-off at their respective Superbowl parties.
Spring Break in March -- Ontario Trip
We are thinking of taking a van full of students on pilgrimage "In the footsteps of Father Simon" through Ontario during the March Break. Among the highlights would be visiting other Companions of the Cross ministries in Toronto (York U chaplaincy?), Assumption Farm in Combermere (perhaps a little retreat time?), and Ottawa (several parishes, sight-seeing?). We might even have to opportunity to do a little ministry? Tentatively we could leave the morning of Tues, March 13 and return the evening of Sun, March 18. The plan is flexible and open for input. The cost would be minimal (gas & food). You will also need to have a passport. For the time being I need an approximate number, so please respond if you are interested (newman@wayne.edu).
Upcoming Companions' General Assembly
Fr. Simon will have to travel back to Ottawa for the community-wide Assembly (which only happens every 6 years).
There will not be any weekday Masses that week: Tues, Jan 31, Wed, Feb 1, and Thurs, Feb 2. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please pray for all of the Companions of the Cross. You may enjoy the following video from Fr. John Paul Bolger, CC (currently ministering in Houston):

Schedules! Schedules! Schedules!
If you already know what your schedule next semester is looking like, please pass it on to me, Fr. Simon (newman@wayne.edu). That way I can try to organize events next term to suit as many people as possible. If you have the flexibility, try to keep Thursday evenings open.
Sunday, February 5 --Sunday Mass
Mass is celebrated in the chapel every Sunday at 5:00 PM. If you live around campus, join us!
In the meantime, please come visit us up on the 7th floor of the Student Center whenever you have a free moment.
If you haven’t already done so, feel free to join the FACEBOOK GROUP “The Newman: Wayne State Catholic Campus Ministry”.
Peace in Christ,
Father Simon
